By virtue of their outstanding role, these agents are considered among the most important against the development of microorganisms that are harmful to living beings. The main antimicrobials are disinfectants, antibiotics and antiseptics, although there are more. Read on for more details.
Life science and antimicrobials
When we talk about antimicrobials, we are referring to those elements that act on microorganisms, both by stopping their growth and by eliminating them. These include microbicidal agents that kill different types of microorganisms, while microbiostatic agents are responsible for stopping or slowing down the development of these microorganisms.
Chemical antimicrobials can be divided into antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and antiparasitic agents. Antibacterials are used to treat or prevent infections and diseases related to bacteria. Antifungals are used to prevent or eliminate the growth of fungi, making them crucial in the medical field. Antivirals, on the other hand, are harmless to the patient and are used to treat viral infections. Finally, antiparasitics are intended to treat infectious diseases caused by parasites.
As is often the case, these micro-organisms do not respond in the same way to specific environmental factors. This is because, depending on the radiation and temperature to which these particles are exposed, they can be either harmful or, on the contrary, beneficial for the development of specific bacterial species. The radiation can be of the ultraviolet type, which causes the micro-organism's cells to lose viability, or of the ionising type, which has a high penetration capacity. In terms of temperature, it is considered a determining factor since, at temperatures above the maximum and below the minimum, microorganisms cannot develop and, therefore, their growth process is halted.
